Our destination, geographic placement
Autonomic region Friuli-Venezia Giulia is one of the 20 Italian regions, i.e. one of the five with complete administrative autonomy. It is situated on North-East of Apennine peninsula and borders with region Veneto, with Austria, Slovenia and Adriatic Sea. Region Friuli-Venezia Giulia is separated in provinces Gorizia, Pordenone, Trieste and Udine, with the capital city Trieste.
At the intersection of the Apennine peninsula, Middle and East Europe, Trieste is the bridge between different cultures and worlds.
It is considered that the history of Trieste begun somewhere 2000 years Before Christ when first immigrants built their colonies at the hills. Villages inhabited by the descendants of the Indo-Europeans, as a natural relation between East and West, shore and sea, soon began to trade and became important traffic and trade centre.
Rapturous history of Trieste, at first defined by the Roman Empire, Habsburg Monarchy, shortly by Venetian Republic, Austria and 2nd World War, is witnessed by the exciting collage of myths and legends, passion, falls and rises, as well as surprising contradiction of rich cultural and architectural legacy, traffic connection, business and trade. Although, the largest prosperity of Trieste happened during Austro-Hungarian Empire to which the neoclassicism and Art Nouveau architectural legacy refers to. At that time, Trieste is the largest Austro-Hungarian port and it became the middle-east city where could be found different cultures, languages and nations.
Today, besides the trade and business centre, Trieste is cultural, entertaining and tourist centre of Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. It is a city of science with prestigious University and many other very important laboratories in the world: ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics), ICGEB (International Centre for Genetical Engineering and Biotechnology), Area di ricerca, Astronomical observatory, Geophysical observatory, etc.
